How much wood do you need to cook with the Cast Iron Wok? Find the perfect amount of heat to start, with 4-6 medium-sized and split logs reduced to coals. Is there a specific wood I should use when cooking? We recommend kiln-dried hardwoods like Oak, Hickory, Maple, and Pecan. Some wood is not safe for cooking, including softwood, plywood, construction scraps, painted or stained lumber, or any composite logs containing accelerants. Can I cook when the fire is burning? The fire pit cooking system works best with a shallow bed of embers in your fire pit’s burn chamber. Flames shouldn’t be higher than a few inches while cooking with the Cast Iron Wok. Do I need to season Cast Iron Wok before I use it - similar to a cast iron skillet? Yes, Cast Iron Wok should be treated just like the cast iron you’re familiar with. The non-stick quality will fully develop after 8-10 seasonings. Allowing an extra 30 minutes before cooking will be plenty of time to season your Cast Iron Wok. Do I need the Hub in order to use the cooktops? Yes, Hub is an essential part of your fire pit cooking system. Cast Iron Wok should never be placed over your fire pit without Hub. After having issues with my first couple orders of Solo Stove accessories on Amazon, I was very hesitant to try again, but I REALLY wanted this wok cooktop for my Ranger, so I decided to give it one more shot.I'm glad I did. When it arrived, I did a very careful inspection, and the wok cooktop was well-packaged and in perfect condition. While I haven't had an opportunity to cook with it yet -- because the weather is too hot and dry at present for recreational fires in my area -- I don't foresee any issues with it based on the condition in which it arrived (if I find I'm wrong about that, I'll update this review). The bottom of the pan nests well in the hub and should remain stable as long as a) the Solo Stove is placed on even, firm ground and b) no one bumps into it. The cooktop is heavy, as one would expect from cast iron, and the one I received didn't have any irregular tooling marks or other flaws -- it is well cast. One thing I will note (not a complaint or something I didn't expect, but something other prospective purchasers might want to know) is that this cooktop may be called a wok but does not have the depth one often expects from a wok. The shallow depth reminds me more of a Korean BBQ pan I used to have or of a shallow discada. That shallowness doesn't bother me as I had noted the depth listed (which is only at the center) and so was expecting exactly what I received. If one isn't paying close attention to dimensions, though, and is expecting something with enough depth to allow one to cook soup, stew, or a pot of beans, one may be disappointed. Currently, this Solo Stove cast iron cooktop is the one that has the greatest depth, so if you want anything deeper, you'll need to rig up something else. While this isn't good for absolutely everything you might cook while camping or hanging out on your patio, though, this wok cooktop is good for a wider variety of dishes than the other two cooktops. One can make stir fry and other dishes that are a little saucy, and one can also do some basic griddle and a lot of pan meals that don't require a fully flat surface -- one thing that appealed to me about this cooktop is that it is particularly well-suited to a lot of one-dish meals. While there is less of an entirely flat surface than there would be on the griddle cooktop made for this system, the slope of this wok cooktop is gentle, so while it might not suit so well if you want to make some pancakes for breakfast (at least when it comes to the Ranger-sized one), one could potentially make a small crepe or a couple fried eggs in the center of the pan -- alternatively, one could definitely make a tasty breakfast skillet/hash/bowl that'd serve multiple people. Due to the shape, this wok cooktop would work better for throwing together a variety of yummy meal bowls than the griddle would, and it would be great for fajitas. The wok cooktop better suits the way I like to eat while camping by myself or with another person, and it allows me to serve more people with a pan this size if I'm socializing. So I'm really glad I took the chance and ordered it.
